This is my entry for Mixed Media Monday. This painting is inspired from a very painful period in my life, when I found out about the ongoing abuse of a very close friend of mine. Her living nightmare started when she was eight years old and lasted for several years. There is nothing worse than stealing the innosense of a child in such a brutal way. Although I was only a couple of years older than her, I always felt responsible for not being able to protect her and shield her from this. She felt so confused and ashamed, that she told no one until she was an adult. What makes me so mad,  when I think about this, is her parents. Why didn't they didn't see any signs? Were they so absorbed in their own problems and just assumed that everything  was fine? Parents are supposed to protect their children, be alert!
I love you my dear friend and every time I think about you I just want to embrace you and keep you safe...

On a lighter note....today is my Birthday and I'd like to thank  all my friends for making it extra special this year!!

I am sorry that this came from such a sad place, but some of our best work does?! You are a good friend and your work is beautiful, Kristin xo

  9. Happy birthday, Joanna. This piece is truly gorgeous, and what a wonderful gift to a friend on your birthday! I love that you gave a voice to her past affliction in such a lovely tribute on your special day. Healing takes time. I recently did a painting as a tribute to my dear friend who just got out of an abusive marriage...her pain and torment at the hands of a “loved one” just leaves me feeling addle minded....
    These trials can grow our compassion...and this alone is a beautiful thing.

  17. Joanna;
    What a sad story. It is more common than we know. Beautiful way to put her story out there and aknowledge her pain.

  18. Joanna, a very nice painting for sure and a very touchy subject, too. There are many of us with a story like that and it's hard and it never leaves you no matter how old you get.
    Having parents who didn't know, didn't see the signs, is hard, too. I'm so sorry for your friend but I'm glad she has you to talk to when and if she needs to.
